Product Description

Tamron's SP 24-70mm is a high quality, highly functional, high speed standard zoom lens covering the 24-70mm focal range. It includes both Tamron's proprietary VC (Vibration Compensation) Image stabilization to reduce shake and its USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive) motor, enabling speedy, silent autofocusing. This SP (Super Performance) series lens makes full use of specialized glass elements in its lens layout, designed with top priority on image quality, including three LD elements and two XR (Extra Refractive Index) glasses. The SP 24-70mm F/2.8 aperture enables a balance between brilliant resolution and beautiful soft blur effects. This ideal lens makes full use of Tamron's rounded diaphragm and the uncontrived, artistic blur that it provides. It is also Tamron's first lens to feature our new moisture-resistant construction. 5.0 out of 5 stars CANON KILLER for FULL FRAME cameras !, May 8, 2012

I need to preface this review with an announcement from Canon that they are releasing three new lenses around summer 2012: An improved Mark II version of their popular EF 24-70mm f/2.8L, and image stabilized versions of their 24mm and 28mm f/2.8 lenses. Canon users were scratching their heads: Why an update to the venerable 24-70mm f/2.8 with NO image stabilization, while at the same time adding IS to the 24 and 28mm primes?? The new EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM is set to retail at $2,299, a whopping $1,000 over the Mark I... with no IS... it just doesn't make any sense, especially when Canon has had an IS equivalent for APS-C cameras out for six years already: the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM.

Now comes this Tamron SP 24-70mm Di VC USD lens (available for Canon, Nikon and Sony mounts), already shipping in late April 2012 for $1000 less than the upcoming Canon non-IS version. Tamron is really stealing Canon's thunder with this lens! The VC stands for Vibration Compensation,... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Jack of All Trades, May 7, 2012
This review is from: Tamron SP 24-70mm Di VC USD Canon Mount AFA007C-700 (Electronics)
I shoot general photography, which includes all sorts of activity, from restaurant outings to gardening. When I bought this lens, I had currently owned the Canon 24-70mm L mark 1, and loved that lens, except it didnt have IS, which is incredibly useful for video and low light. I found that my keeper rates have not changed going to the Tamron (if anything, it improved from great to excellent), but the sharpness had definitely improved at every focal length and aperture. I had to verify that it wasnt my imagination, so I tried a few tests on a tripod, using live view, and indeed the tamron was a tad sharper at every focal length and aperture on my full frame camera.

It's not the perfect lens though (I dont believe one exists!), it is the jack of all trades. VC is extremely competent, probably the best in the business. AF is not L fast, but fast enough that I dont miss shots, and even AI Servo works fine. The build quality is on par with the 24-105mm, very very solidly built... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Compares very well to the Canon 24-70 L, May 2, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Tamron SP 24-70mm Di VC USD Canon Mount AFA007C-700 (Electronics)
Initial impressions:

- on the wide end, it's significantly sharper than a good copy of the 24-70, most clearly so wide open
- on the long end it's a little less sharp wide open, but catches up just a stop later
- focusing speed is a little slower, but we're talking fractions of a second
- the IS/VC is a huge help / image-saver at lower shutter speeds

More testing is required, but this lens will likely become my go-to lens for wedding photography (where receptions are often poorly lit), replacing the Canon 24-70 L
